Doomed Yokel Published on Substack (Not)

OK, so I copied all of Doomed Yokel from my blog at johnwenstrom.com to a Substack page, and then published the page.

Substack ignored all my soft line breaks, so, instead of 19-line villanelles, the Yokel Songs became 6 prose blocks with lots of internal rhyme.

I rather like the Yokel Songs as prose blocks -- it's nice not to have to make people worry about the villanelle form.

Next would be Woke Yokel, which bears witness to the demonstrations following the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Trans Yokel and Bardic Yokel won't be far behind.

____________

Well, I deleted the Substack Doomed Yokel post. It seemed confusing to me. I deleted all my Substack posts - some photos of poems from Yokel Comedian, and a post of my old Refuse the Abuse screed.

I have a problem with the self-promotional angle of Substack. I don't want to have ask people to subscribe to me.

I have already "published" the eleven Selected Yokel Song books on my blog. They look good enough--the bird photos shown in the clickable titles.

They do get hits. Selected Doomed Yokel Songs got five hits today.

I can put links to them in Facebook groups and so on if I want.

The advantage of publishing them on Substack would be that I could promote trans-ness and woke-ness.

I could come out to everyone as trans and woke, and it might work as an act of resistance against the MAGA regime.

It might seem risky and to be an act of courage--I would be saying, Send ICE after me or whatever if you want!

I could post them without asking for subscriptions--just try to make them as well-edited and readable as possible--try to make people who stumble on them understand that the collections may be read quickly.

Maybe I could start by posting Queer Yokel: Fifty-Five Selected Yokel Songs--is that what it's called now?

It would be fun--would give me something to do.

Someone might read them and learn something about trans-ness and woke-mess and all the other Chakral qualities.
